A few factors to consider when evaluating the Hungarian forint:
Reasons to consider
- The Hungarian forint could strengthen as the country transitions towards the adoptions of the euro. Experts do not expect adoption of the European Union currency before 2014.
Risk factors to consider
- As an emerging market, Hungary's economy and the value of the forint can be highly susceptible to fluctuations in the global marketplace.
- During 2007, Hungary's economy grew by 1.3%. GDP year-over-year growth in January, 2008 slowed to 0.8% while Hungary's inflation rate grew to 7.1% year-over-year. This has prompted speculation that the country could be slipping into stagflation.
