Rather that receiving $100,000 of FDIC insurance coverage with your bank account, you now get at least $250,000 until December 31, 2009 through legislation that went into effect on October 3, 2008. The new Basic FDIC Deposit Insurance Coverage Limits:1

  • Single Accounts (owned by one person)—$250,000 per owner2
  • Joint Accounts (two or more persons)—$250,000 per co-owner2
  • IRAs and certain other retirement accounts—$250,000 per owner
  • Trust Accounts and accounts for the benefit of another person—$250,000 per owner per beneficiary, subject to specific limitations and requirements2

You also have increased flexibility when selecting beneficiaries, so be sure your accounts are properly titled in case the unexpected occurs. Check out our guide to FDIC insurance for more information.
